Tom Long at HCU

Tom Long, professor of homiletics at Emory, came to our school this past Friday to present a couple of talks with a Q&A also during lunch. It was really quite fantastic. After some reflection we realized that he really didn't offer a whole lot in the way of critical analysis of the sermon genre. But he presented a whole bunch of insight into all kinds of biblical texts with a view toward homiletical points.

The lectures were not recorded as they comprise material going into Long's next book, which is now in its beginning stages. So, if you missed them, you missed out.

At the very end, someone asked Long to recommend a few books for all of us to read. Here are his recommendations.

• Matthew Myer Boulton, Life in God: John Calvin, Practical Formation, and the Future of Protestant Theology (Eerdmans, 2011). 
• Luke Timothy Johnson, The Creed: What Christians Believe and Why It Matters (Doubleday, 2003).
